Account of an exploration of Persia by Edward Granville Browne, which served to enamor him of the country and its people. After this one twelve month journey he became known as a foremost expert on Persia.

The first western academic to meet Baha’u’llah, Prophet-Founder of the Baha’i Faith – an experience which he would recount in a later work. This volume contains many references to The Bab, his followers and his martyrdom, including his miraculously surviving the first volley of a Firing Squad.

It remains as well, outside of the Baha’i context, one of the finest 19th Century travel writings on the people and culture of Persia (present day Iran). The length of time Browne journeyed throughout Persia, and his academic credentials, combine to provide a picture that is both thorough and readable.
